COVID-19 threatens to overwhelm our healthcare resources, and the situation is made even worse when key doctors are forced to stay away to avoid infecting their co-workers and patients.

Since the beginning of this year, I’ve been working on a pilot project to use the Remote Expert function in Augmented Reality to support front line healthcare providers in rural areas, where there aren’t enough doctors.

The @Mira Labs system we are using is simple and works with an iPhone. When a doctor receives a call on their computer through the system, they can see what the person in the field sees and help assess the patient or direct treatment. The doctor is able to annotate the view on the headset; share documents, images, or web pages; communicate by a chat function; and of course speak in real time.

This allows a doctor who can’t be on the spot–possibly because they are ill or quarantined–to continue to help treat patients. In the current circumstances, we need to maximize our healthcare resources, and this may be one way to do so.

If you are a doctor or healthcare organization and would like more information, please reach out to me. I’ll be happy to try and support you however I can.
